Here are the top ten banks in America, ranked by total assets. There are also a couple of interesting facts about each bank.
- Bank of America. Has over 205,000 employees. Has committed $20 billion over the next 10 years to promote an environmentally-friendly business.
- JPMorgan Chase & Co. Tony Blair, ex Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, was once a employee. Won the Business Week ‘Top 10 Best Places to Launch a Career’ award this year (2008).
- Citigroup. Largest shareholder is a Saudi Arabian Prince named Al-Waleed bin Talal. Have over 350,000 employees.
- Wachovia. May merge with Wells Fargo (currently some legal battles going on with Citigroup). Lost $8.9 billion in the second quarter of 2008.
- Wells Fargo. Only bank with a ‘AAA’ rating from S&P (Standard & Poor’s). Has over 23 million customers. Has an excellent environmental record.
- US Bancorp. Was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1890. Headquarters are in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
- Suntrust Banks. Have over 1700 branches in the Southern states. Had assets of $171.5 billion in June, 2008. Founded in 1811. (As a side note, I must say that this is a terrible name for a bank. Sounds like ‘some trust banks’)
- HSBC Bank USA. Have 400 branches throughout New York. Official headquarters are in Wilmington, Delaware. Is a subsidiary of HSBC Holdings.
- KeyBank. There are 1,479 Keybank ATM machines. Has over 18,000 employees. Listed as KEY on the New York Stock Exchange.
- State Street Bank. Was founded back in 1792. Ronald Logue is the CEO and Chairman. Have centers worldwide, including Sydney, London, Frankfurt, Munich and Edinburgh.
